Japanese 7-spice pepper for tuna, beef, chicken or pork, but also for noodles and stews. Read more
Spicy is almost indispensable in Japanese cuisine. In Japanese, this spice mix is called Nanami Togarashi or Shichimi Togarashi. The name is typical of what it has to offer, which is a mix of a Japanese 7 spice pepper. The Japanese name shichimi tōgarashi literally means 'seven-flavors chili pepper'; shichi is the word for 'seven', mi stands for 'taste' and tōgarashi is Japanese for 'red pepper'. This spice mix consists of tōgarashi (chili pepper), sanshō, roasted orange peel, sesame seeds (white & black), ginger powder and nori (roasted seaweed). In Japanese cuisine, the spice mixture is used as a dry marinade for tuna, beef, chicken or pork, for example, but also for noodles and stews. The mix is decent but not very spicy. It tastes great on tuna sashimi and, sprinkled on just about any sushi, it brings it to life.
