Recipe: Uramaki Sushi

Do you crave Uramaki Sushi and want to make it yourself? In this blog you can read how you can roll Uramaki Sushi yourself and see which ingredients you need.

How do you roll Uramaki sushi?

Follow the steps below to roll the perfect Uramaki Sushi.

  • Prepare your bamboo mat by wrapping it in foil.
  • Place a sheet of Nori (seaweed) on the bamboo mat. It does not matter which side is up or down.
  • Place the rice on the Nori sheet and gently spread the rice to the corners with your fingers. For Uramaki you use a little more rice than for Maki. Make sure to leave about 1 cm of space at the bottom.
  • Spread some Japanese Togarashi spices and sesame seeds over the rice.
  • Grab the nori sheet by the ends and turn it over so that the rice is on the bottom and you have an empty nori side on top.
  • Now place your toppings in the center of the nori. Do this horizontally.
  • Now roll upwards from the bottom so that the roll closes. Put some pressure on the roll and roll it off again.
  • You now only have to cut the Uramaki and then you can enjoy it!

Spicy Salmon/Avocado Roll:

  • Follow the steps above through step 5.
  • Use a piece of the salmon fillet. This is the tastiest part of the salmon and very suitable for sushi.
  • Cut the salmon lengthwise into strips about 1 cm wide.
  • Place the salmon in the middle of the nori sheet.
  • Add some Kewpie Wasabi Mayonnaise here.
  • Cut avocado lengthwise and add it too.
  • Continue with step 7.
  • Tip: not a fan of avocado? You can also omit these and replace them with, for example, spring onions.

Spicy Tuna/Avocado:

  • Follow the steps above through step 5.
  • Use a fresh piece of tuna.
  • Cut the tuna lengthwise into strips about 1 cm wide.
  • Place the tuna in the middle of the nori sheet.
  • Add some Sriracha Chili or Sriracha Mayonnaise.
  • Cut avocado lengthwise and add it too.
  • Continue with step 7.
  • Tip: not a fan of avocado? You can also omit these and replace them with, for example, spring onions or cucumber.

California rolls:

  • Follow the steps above through step 5.
  • Cut the cucumber diagonally and then lengthwise into strips.
  • Remove the pit from the avocado and cut it lengthwise into strips. You can put some lime on top, so that the avocado stays nice and green.
  • Remove the crab from the shell and continue with step 7.
