How do you roll maki sushi?
A maki roll is a sushi roll with the Nori (seaweed) on the outside. Popular Maki types are Kappa Maki (cucumber), Avocado Maki, Tuna Maki and Salmon Maki. For salmon it is best to use a piece of fresh salmon fillet.
- Prepare your bamboo mat by wrapping it in foil.
- Place a sheet of Nori (seaweed) on the bamboo mat with the rough side up. The rougher (less shiny) side is the side the rice will be on.
- Wet your hands a little so that the rice does not stick to your hands. Place the rice on the Nori sheet and gently spread the rice to the corners with your fingers. Make sure the layer of rice is about a centimeter high and leave about 2 cm of space at the top.
- Prepare your topping. Cucumber: Cut the cucumber lengthwise into strips. Avocado: Cut the avocado lengthwise into strips. Tuna: Cut the tuna lengthwise into strips. Salmon: Cut the salmon lengthwise into strips. Try to cut everything in a width of +- 1 cm.
- Place your favorite topping in the center of the rice layer.
- Now roll the sushi tightly with the bamboo mat facing upwards. You can keep your finger on the filling to make it easier to roll.
- Wet the end of the Nori sheet a little so that it stays in place. Raise the end of the bamboo mat a little bit and continue rolling. Push the bamboo mat firmly, but gently.
- Is there some rice sticking out on the side? Put the roll back in the bamboo mat, hold it firmly, but carefully and press the rice with wet fingers.
- Use a sharp knife and wet it a little with water. Cut the sushi tightly into pieces and serve with wasabi, soy sauce and ginger.
